Tip # 1: Find the Best Lighting Indoors

The best lighting is soft indirect natural light. If you are indoors, make sure to open your blinds and let in as much light as possible. Consistent natural light is the best for taking photos because it doesn’t create harsh shadows.

Tip # 2 – Avoid Direct Sunlight Outdoors

Direct sunlight can create harsh shadows on your child’s face, so it is best to avoid taking pictures during the middle of a bright sunny day! The best time to go outside for picture taking is either before or after 11 am because this will give you the softest lighting.

Tip #3  – Find a Comfortable Background

It is important to find a background that compliments your child and highlights their beautiful features! When you are taking photos, try moving around until you find an interesting backdrop, or even just turning them towards something pretty will make all the difference in the world! If they are indoors, you could always take pictures in front of a pretty window.

In order to capture your child’s everyday events, it is important that they are comfortable and relaxed! If they get too fussy from being held or any other reason, gently put them down on the floor so that they can explore the surroundings on their own. You may have to take motion shots at times, but you can always delete them if they are not what you were hoping for!

Tip #4  -Turn On Your iPhone Grid

Your iPhone grid will break down your photo screen into nine parts helping you to take better photos!

“I love this function because it helps me keep my images level. Crooked pictures drive me batty. The grid function will also help you achieve great composition. If you place your subject or points of interest at intersections of the grid, the photo will follow the “Rule of Thirds” and be more pleasing to the eye.Don’t feel pressured to go crazy with the rule of thirds – remember rules are meant to be broken! You can always crop an image after it has been taken.” – Ren of House Fur

Tip #5  – Take Lots of Photos

Take lots and lots of photos when it comes to photographing your children doing everyday things because there is no way that you will get it perfect on the first try! Practice makes perfect, so taking lots of photos is the best way to get one that you can use.

Tip #6  – Show Emotion

The most important thing about taking pictures of your children is capturing their emotions and expressions in a genuine way. Get down to eye level with them if they are smaller children and really look at them when you are taking the photo to show that emotion. For example, if your child is playing with their dog, make sure to get photos of them smiling or laughing!

Tip # 7 – Edit Efficiently

Don’t go crazy editing your pictures because it can take forever and over-editing doesn’t look great! I personally love taking all my pictures into VSCO and adjusting some things to make them look more crisp and clean before sharing with friends or family.

Tip #8  – Be Patient with Yourself

Lastly, be patient with yourself if you are new to taking photos of your children on your phone. Learning how to take good pictures isn’t an overnight process and it takes time before you start getting the hang of things! Try not to get discouraged if they don’t turn out perfect because you will get better with practice.
